Private View Saturday 11 October 4.00 – 5.00 Stained Glass Museum Sunday 12 October – Saturday 8 November at The Stained Glass Museum (Opening Times) Exhibiting in England for the first time in twenty years, Leo Amery shows his stained glass wall hangings at The Stained Glass Museum, Ely Cathedral and The Angela Mellor Gallery, Ely, in October. "Ten years ago I started working in different ways to use stained glass taking it out of the realm of the applied arts." says Amery. " This opened up possibilities and created challenges very different from my commissioned work. I'm excited to be back in England showing this work in Ely." Amery's work is designed to be hung on a wall and, unusually for stained glass, lit from the front. The overall effect creates a relief of colour, light and shadow. Amery’s work retains the essential dynamic of stained glass, the passage of light. Amery’s work is abstract often inspired by the natural environment. Wind, rain, sun are elements close to the surface though this is much more than a description or illustration. He creates an uplifting sense of powerful forces. Amery studied stained glass part time at Central School of Art, London in the late seventies, when he also had his first studio in Rotherhithe. After a period travelling in Africa, Australia and Asia, he had a studio in Kingsgate workshops, Kilburn for eight years. In 1987 he moved to the countryside in southwest France where he lives with his wife and two children. " Creatively, it was a move I will never regret. I live in a simple stone house surrounded by the changing lights, colours and outlines of this area of south west France. To have such an unspoilt landscape on the doorstep is an inspiration. " Entry to the exhibition is free.
